| ARTIST STATEMENT My environment growing up in the 1980s fostered a significant influence in my artistic interests. Being an ‘80s child, I was bombarded by the first wave of major movie blockbusters, video games, cartoons and the resurgence of comic books. Common elements pulled from these influences and incorporated into many of my works include a subject representing good or evil, a dynamic pose or action reflecting the archetype of the subject, bold coloration and composition driven by a narrative. Though based on more current subject content, they still reflect traditional ideas artists have focused on for hundreds of years – mythology and religion. These reflections on past cultural stories and beliefs become applied to works that may be considered fantasy or science fiction, but the underlying narratives are still the same. Drawing and painting are my primary methods of expression, but neither relies on traditional mediums. With the growing capabilities offered by digital technology, my modes of expressions have become a hybrid between the two. Works like The Fallen 2001 represent this quality of mixing traditional and digital. Each new discovery in one medium promotes new ideas for the other. I believe it’s critical as an artist to consider and explore new ideas in both content and media. |
